Milk for Mother

Vidyawati of village Barjorkhera, has 4 children; the eldest is nine years and the youngest, one year and four months. As VHW Urmila had advised she gave breast milk soon after giving birth to her youngest child. But when the child was just three months old she fell ill and her milk dried up after that.

Though very poor Vidyawati and her husband bought cow's milk to feed the baby. Urmila suggested that if the mother had the milk they bought for the child she would begin to lactate once again. Urmila later said she herself was not sure this would work, but she took a chance. Luckily the mother started lactating within three days of having milk. Of course, she was also having dal and leafy vegetables regularly.

Vidyawati regularly gives her family the bulgar she gets from the SMCS program. She soaks it for a while and then fries it lightly with salt. She does not make porridge because they cannot afford to buy either sugar to milk.
